Society of
Saint Vincent de Paul
Edmonton Area
We need a building************We need help to get one**************Can you help us?

A chapel is a chapel, unless it’s the overcrowded Distribution Centre (DC) of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in Edmonton. We have been operating in Edmonton since late 1990s, and from this little building for the past seven years.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a charitable organization entirely run by volunteers who provide assistance to those in need through distributing items donated by the public. We respond to 1200 SSVP Hotline calls for help each month, going out in pairs to visit people in need. Once needs are assessed, basic necessities are then delivered.

We give a hand up to those in need, allowing them to retain their dignity and pride as they struggle in crisis situations. We allow them to continue to function and use their limited financial resources for necessary basics.

To accomplish the above we:

· Make home visitations offering non-judgmental interaction to discover needs of clients

· Provide furniture and household goods which are picked up and redistributed at no cost to those in need

· Operate a clothing room providing access to free clothing five days per week

· Deliver food hampers to those unable to access the Edmonton food bank (on an emergency basis)

· Provide bus tickets and gift cards for food

To deliver these social services, we manage with 100% volunteer energy and the labour of nearly 600 volunteers. (In the 2016 fiscal year, total volunteer hours contributed was 78,418.) We serve the poor in a non-sectarian manner. In 2016 we assisted 4,660 adults and 3,618 children in 3.081 households during 3534 visits. Our volunteers include home visitors, furniture delivery and pickup people, and Distribution Centre Volunteers. The need is great and constantly increases.

The Society has been searching for new space the last few years. Ideally, a facility of up to 10,000 sq. ft., heated and largely open would work well. One with overhead doors and a loading dock would allow for easier and more efficient loading and unloading. A north of the river location, outside the downtown core, is most central for volunteers and clients coming for clothing. Of course, the trickiest part when it comes to finding a place is that the price has to be right.

As an entirely non-profit group, we are calling on those who might have resources to help us find a place where we can continue to help those in need. Please help with a building or donating money for us to buy one. We are a registered non profit organization and will provide tax receipts.
